Envita has been a trusted sustainability partner for our customers for more than twenty years. It’s our responsibility to adapt and evolve with the global sustainability context, whether it’s regarding the services and solutions we provide to our customers or when looking inwardly at our own operations. When the time came to ensure we were ‘walking the talk,’ a materiality assessment was the most appropriate and meaningful place to start.

Challenge:

Envita Solutions is strategically positioning itself as North America’s premier total waste management company. To further these efforts, Envita recognized the need to adopt Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategies aligned with customer commitments.

Industry trends and evolving customer needs emphasized the importance of ESG and sustainability expertise for sustainable growth. The ability to secure new business and retain existing customers depended on effective customer engagement around sustainability. Despite expressed sustainability needs from customers, Envita lacked a systematic, detailed inventory of sustainability trends and specific customer requirements. A comprehensive approach was essential to prioritize its path forward.

Solution:

ClimeCo worked closely with Envita’s Senior Director of Operations & Sustainability, Shaun Miller, to address these challenges. Our team conducted a comprehensive materiality assessment to identify the most relevant ESG topics for Envita and its stakeholders.

We gathered valuable input through interviews with internal and external stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, business partners, community members, investors, and regulators. ClimeCo completed quantitative and qualitative analyses of interviews and survey results to determine Envita’s material topics. We aimed to align the leadership team on these important ESG topics, ensuring that their future sustainability initiatives and reporting were well-informed and purposeful.

Materiality Assessment Process

Results:

Following a comprehensive materiality assessment, Envita identified priority ESG issues that are of most importance to its stakeholders and business.

This included circularity and recycling, waste management, hazardous waste management, GHG emissions, employee health and safety, talent attraction and development, supply chain management, and innovation. Envita’s leadership is now aligned with these material ESG topics and has integrated them into the organization’s culture.

Building upon the assessment, Envita has defined a robust internal sustainability strategy that aligns with stakeholder priorities and values. This strategy features ambitious targets, including renewable energy targets and a public science-based emissions reduction target, to demonstrate the organization’s commitment to responsible practices and positive impact.

In conclusion, the materiality assessment informed and enabled goal-setting as an integrated part of the overall long-term business strategy for the organization.
