At Altitude Sports, sustainability has always been part of our DNA. Achieving B Corp certification was an important milestone, but it was just the beginning. By helping us move away from estimates and dig into real, activity-based data, ClimeCo empowered us to take true ownership of our climate impact. We now have a clear, data-driven roadmap to reduce our Scope 3 emissions where it matters most.

Challenge:

Altitude Sports, a leading outdoor and sporting goods retailer, has long prioritized sustainability as a core part of its business. To formalize that commitment, Altitude set its sights on B Corp certification, which required establishing a credible Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory as a prerequisite. After achieving certification, Altitude wanted to identify key areas to strengthen its climate strategy ahead of future recertification. Its existing Scope 3 was limited to a high-level, spend-based accounting approach, and there was a desire to move towards activity-based data for high-impact categories. Additionally, the company wanted to understand what emissions reductions were achievable and use that to develop a decarbonization roadmap with realistic targets.

Approach:

Altitude Sports collaborated with ClimeCo across multiple phases, starting with a Scope 1 and 2 inventory. ClimeCo worked with the Altitude team to identify and evaluate emissions sources across its operations, collect the relevant activity data, and develop a dynamic footprinting tool to calculate operational emissions results. This supported the company in achieving B Corp certification in 2024.

In 2025, the partnership expanded into Scope 3 refinement and decarbonization planning. The team moved away from spend-based estimates for purchased goods by incorporating supplier survey data, SDEX survey data, material composition data, life cycle assessment (LCA) data, and unit inventories to build a Category 1 footprint based on real supplier information. For transportation, the team initiated a shift toward a hybrid approach that leveraged carrier-specific data in place of industry averages.

ClimeCo also built an interactive abatement and target-setting model, identifying a mix of high-priority and easily implementable emissions reduction measures across all scopes, quantifying their potential impact, and testing a range of target scenarios based on realistic implementation pathways.

Results:

The Scope 1 and 2 inventories gave Altitude a clear view of its operational emissions and contributed to the company receiving its B Corp certification. By moving to activity-based accounting, Altitude finally has visibility into what it can control and where to focus improvement within its Scope 3. The team is also now equipped with an internally maintainable framework that can be utilized for future recalculations.

With the abatement roadmap and target models in place, Altitude is in a strong position to guide internal decisions, set targets it can stand behind, and use the work as a foundation for future supplier engagement.
