Sustainable Brands 2025 (SB’25) convened leaders and innovators redefining the intersection of purpose and profit. In keynotes, workshops, and partner sessions, ClimeCo’s team engaged with the emerging themes shaping sustainability strategy in 2025 and beyond. Here are our top five takeaways:
1. Sustainability is a Business Imperative and a Profit Driver
As the conference unfolded, one message was clear: sustainability is no longer a “nice-to-have.” In today’s politically charged climate, companies are reframing the conversation around business value, resilience, and risk mitigation. Now, the business case for sustainability must be embedded in every decision. Leaders highlighted the need to translate sustainability into the language of finance, operations, and growth, while sessions showed that innovation and collaboration can benefit both the planet and bottom lines.
Action steps: Conduct a company-wide audit to identify key decision points where sustainability metrics can be embedded and establish a cross-functional task force to develop aligned sustainability objectives integrated into financial and operational planning.
2. Innovation Exists, But Scaling Remains the Challenge
Building on this business imperative, innovation continues to thrive. Breakthroughs in lower-carbon materials, plant-based plastics, and circular design continue, but adoption lags. Cost and supply-chain complexity limit scaling, especially in packaging and materials. Speakers advocated for investments in manufacturability, logistics optimization, and waste reduction “behind the shelf,” where sustainability gains also cut costs.
Action steps: Prioritize investing in scalable supply chain solutions and partner with suppliers to drive down material costs. Set measurable targets for waste reduction during product development.
3. Consumers Are the Catalyst for Scalable Impact
Extending this focus on implementation, the consumer’s role emerged as pivotal. Consumer purchasing power drives measurable change. Amazon noted that products with sustainability certifications – like the ClimeCo Certified Product™ badge – consistently outperform others. Few retailers match this level of consumer engagement. Scaling these practices across retail landscape could accelerate mainstream impact.
Action steps: Work with retailers to expand sustainability certification programs and create customer awareness campaigns to encourage sustainable purchasing.
4. The Evolving Role of the Chief Sustainability Officer
Amidst this shift driven by consumer demand, the conference explored leadership evolution. Future Chief Sustainability Officers must combine technical and commercial expertise, especially in sales, finance, and market development. Panels noted a gender gap in commercial leadership within sustainability, especially for women, calling for focused upskilling and mentorship to develop the next generation of CSOs.
Action steps: Implement mentorship and training programs targeting commercial skills for sustainability professionals, with a focus on closing gender gaps.
5. Storytelling and Resilience Define the Next Phase
Looking ahead, the final theme addressed how companies communicate these efforts. With heightened scrutiny around ESG claims, how companies communicate impact is evolving. The anti-ESG backlash is being reframed as proof of progress and mainstream acceptance. Companies now emphasize resilience, efficiency, domestic energy security, and waste reduction – positioning sustainability as central to competitiveness. Authentic, data-driven storytelling remains essential to bridge brand purpose and public trust.
Action steps: Develop a strategic communications framework that emphasizes authentic, data-backed storytelling focused on resilience and competitive advantage, including training for key spokespeople to effectively convey these messages to diverse stakeholders.
