ClimeCo Statement to Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)
ClimeCo believes that Environmental Attribute Certificates (EACs), including verified carbon credits, play a crucial role in addressing Scope 3 emissions that cannot be immediately abated.
While we strongly advocate for direct emission reductions as the primary goal, EACs, when used responsibly, provide essential support for hard-to-abate sectors and accelerate climate finance to critical global projects. A balanced approach, integrating both direct reductions and strategic use of EACs, is critical for advancing a low-carbon future and supporting global sustainable development.
The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has acknowledged the ongoing debate around EACs. The organization’s April statement emphasizes the importance of scientific evidence and well-defined policies to support their use as an additional tool for climate mitigation. This perspective aligns with our view that high-quality carbon credits can complement direct emission reduction efforts, ensuring companies can meet their ambitious targets while supporting global decarbonization efforts.
