ClimeCo is excited to announce the issuance of carbon credits for the Yacumama Forest Conservation Project under Verra’s Verified Carbon Standard. As one of the longest standing REDD+ projects, it highlights the importance of forest conservation in a region that supports biodiversity.
The Yacumama Forest Conservation Project protects 2,863 hectares (approximately 7,075 acres) of tropical rainforest in the Peruvian Amazon Basin, an area threatened by agricultural and logging for valuable timber. Through carbon financing, the project secures funding to maintain the forest by preventing deforestation for at least 30 years. The Yacumama forest provides for primate species and a diverse array of birds and, its protection can help threatened Amazonian species, including jaguars, tapirs, sloths, harpy eagles, and the elusive pink dolphin of the Yarapa River.
This family-run conservation effort was established before the advent of climate-action projects, and it is through the family’s dedication and passion for conservation that this project has come to be. With this issuance, the Yacumama Forest Conservation Project is well positioned to be able to continue its partnerships with NGO’s like Amazon Promise, helping deliver vital medical and educational initiatives to the local community, this project embodies a truly holistic approach to conservation.
The Yacumama Forest Conservation Project delivers meaningful environmental and community benefits beyond carbon sequestration. By maintaining forest cover along the Yarapa River, the project preserves water quality and protects crucial habitats that sustain the local fishery – a vital resource for the surrounding community of Puerto Miguel, whose residents rely on the river to fish and forage. Despite growing lodge development and tourism in the area, the project has helped safeguard this ecosystem for generations to come. Through partnerships with local and indigenous communities, the project provides employment opportunities and fosters a shared commitment to forest stewardship. The initiative also supports several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).

About Yacumama
Yacumama, once an eco-tourism lodge, is privately owned and dedicated to conservation. Under the leadership of the Bishop siblings, the property transitioned from tourism to ecological research, environmental education, and most importantly, long-term forest protection.
About Amazon Promise
Amazon Promise is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides medical relief to remote communities in the Upper Amazon Basin of northeastern Peru. We are headquartered in the United States, with an in-country base in the city of Iquitos. In 1993, our fledging organization made a promise to help the forgotten, poverty-stricken families who live in this region.
We have honored this pledge ever since, providing much-needed medical and dental care, health education and training from Belén, Iquitos and via outreach to 32 remote river villages located throughout Loreto, Peru’s largest state.
